The lightest boy in the world born in Göttingen
The lightest boy in the world born in Göttingen.
After a few days ago it was assumed that the 297 grams world's lightest surviving male baby from Japan, has now become known that this already unimaginable "weight" of a Göttingen-born baby even below. So the boy, whose name is not known, already in the summer of last year with only 275 grams and 27 centimeters in the Göttingen university medicine (UMG) came to the world. Prior to that, the mother from North Thuringia was admitted to gynecology at the University Hospital Göttingen because of pregnancy problems in the 25th week of pregnancy or more than 15 weeks before the actual date of birth - the problem: the baby was endangered in the womb but life threatening small, because so far pediatricians assumed that at a birth weight of
less than 350 grams there is no chance of survival.
The doctors in Göttingen could have postponed the birth finally still two days, in which the mother drugs were administered to support the lung development, because usually the lungs are formed only from the 34th week of pregnancy. Finally, due to complications, the doctors have no choice but to get the boy - but the chance of survival was rated as "low", especially because the mortality rate in male preemies is about 25% higher than in females.
But the boy defied the experts' assessments and finally got home after six months of intensive care without serious complications and a weight of 3700 grams in December of last year - and is intensively supported and medically supervised for a continued good development. (sb, 07.03.2010)
