Does breast milk contain the future anti-cancer drug? Scientists from the Swedish universities of Lund and Gothenburg have used a substance contained in breast milk to test for bladder cancer patients and thereby kill cancer cells.

(21.04.2010) Scientists from the Swedish universities Lund and Gothenburg have used a substance contained in breast milk to test people with bladder cancer, killing cancer cells.
The substance was actually discovered years ago in breast milk. Researchers discovered them by accident when they examined mother's milk for its antibacterial effect. The substance was named HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor Cells). It consists of a protein and a fatty acid that are normally contained in breast milk. It is believed that HAMLET in the baby's stomach could cause the formation of the acidic environment.

Now scientists are testing people with bladder cancer. They found out that HAMLET can kill 40 different cancers. Very important: HAMLET kills only cancer cells and leaves healthy cells in peace.

Researchers Roger Karlsson, a researcher at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg, Ingela Lanekoff and Maja Puchades now want to examine in more detail how HAMLET interacts with cell membranes and tests the substance in people with mucosal tumors and brain tumors. They published their results in the renowned journal PloS ONE. (Thorsten Fischer, HP Osteopathy)
