Health insurance SBK reimburses osteopathy

06/29/2012

Osteopathy has become increasingly established in recent years as a useful supplement to conventional medicine. Through manual diagnostics and therapy, blockages in the body are broken down and the self-healing powers of the patient are activated. Especially with headache, dizziness and back pain is reported about good results. Since 1 April 2012, the statutory health insurance SBK reimburses its insured each year up to six osteopathic treatments with up to 30 euros per session.

Pushing, pulling, kneading - who goes into the hands of an osteopath, is literally processed with these. Because in osteopathy, both diagnostics and therapy are performed exclusively manually. Apparatus, syringes and medicines do not exist. It does not understand itself as a replacement for medical or surgical treatments, but rather as a useful supplement. The aim is to activate the self-healing powers of the patient and to relieve discomfort.

Osteopathy is based on a holistic understanding of the body. All body parts - including the internal organs - are coordinated. The smooth interaction and mobility of the parts is the foundation of our health. In case of illness, the mobility of one or more parts may be limited. The osteopath tries to detect and solve corresponding blockages. Through various techniques that improve blood circulation, in particular, the body's immune system should be activated and the self-healing process set in motion.

Osteopathy is mainly used to treat chronic pain. Before the actual treatment, the osteopath conducts a detailed anamnesis interview, in which the temporal development of the current symptoms is understood. Also physical and emotional traumas are of great importance, they may be the source of later discomfort, even if they occur elsewhere. After the interview, the osteopath examines the entire body for blockages, which are then to be solved. In most cases, only about three treatments are needed to achieve success.

Osteopathy is considered a gentle treatment that can be used even in infants. In some cases, however, their use is not useful or even contraindicated. Therefore, osteopathic treatment should always be initiated by a physician. The term „osteopath“ is not protected in Germany. To be sure that you receive a high quality treatment, the treating osteopath should have been a member of a professional association of osteopaths or have undergone osteopathic education equivalent.
