Binge drinking is out of fashion
The so-called coma drinking has caused great excitement in recent years. Many people were worried that both girls, especially boys, get drunk during puberty and alcohol intoxication. Now, however, there seems to be a turnaround. As can be seen from new, as yet unpublished, figures from the statistical offices of the Länder, there are fewer young comrades in the various federal states. This is reported by various media with reference to the news agency DPA.
Number of youthful comasers in Bavaria declined
For example, the number of young comasers in Bavaria has fallen for the second time since 2006. According to the report, 4,998 children and adolescents with alcohol poisoning came to the hospital last year. The number fell by around eight percent compared to the previous year. The head of the health insurance DAK, Gottfried Prehofer said the dpa with a view to the positive development: „I hope that there will be a turnaround in the youthful comasers in the country.“ Overall, the alcohol abuse of children and adolescents aged between ten and 20 years was recorded. Among the alcohol patients were 2,982 boys and 2,016 girls. Thus, the number of male patients fell more than the proportion of female adolescents. In 2013, about eleven percent fewer boys and about three percent fewer girls had to be treated.
Campaign against the binge drinking continues
In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, the number of young comas in 2013 is declining. There, 5,267 adolescents with alcohol poisoning came to the hospital last year. As the DAK announced in Dusseldorf, this was 14.7 percent less than in 2012. The health insurance appeals to yet unpublished statistics from the National Statistics Office. Among the comatose drinkers between the ages of ten and 20, there were 3,014 boys and 2,253 girls. According to the DAK, the decline was particularly pronounced for 10- to 15-year-olds. In the past year, 672 intoxicants came to the clinic from them. That was a good quarter less than in 2012. The health insurance wants together with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia the campaign „colorful instead of blue - art against drunkenness“ Continue in 2015. It encourages students to develop messages against binge drinking on billboards.
Alcohol consumption promotes various diseases
A positive trend is also reported from Hesse. The DAK health said Wednesday, citing unpublished statistics from the State Statistics Office, that the number of young comasers in Hesse has fallen sharply. 1,400 children and adolescents - including 600 girls - were hospitalized in the state in 2013 with alcohol poisoning, 400 fewer than the year before. The number of male patients fell more sharply than in the previous year. The decline was particularly strong among the younger ones. Furthermore, declining numbers were also announced from Rhineland-Palatinate and Berlin. It remains to be hoped that the trend will continue for a long time and alcohol abuse will generally be reduced. Especially against the background that high alcohol consumption favors or causes numerous diseases such as fatty liver or gastritis and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack.
