Plastic utensils are unsuitable for pregnant women because of the plasticizers they contain, which can be removed during use and ingested with food. The plasticizers can increase the asthma risk of the unborn child, reports the news agency „dpa“ citing Professor Harald Morr of the German Lung Foundation. A recent study has shown that the two plasticizer types BBP and DBP lead to an increased risk of childhood asthma.
In the current study, from 1998 to 2006, urine samples from 300 pregnant women and after birth from their children were sent to the laboratory for analysis and tested for plasticizer contamination „dpa“. In the evaluation, a specific search was made for possible connections between the asthma diagnosis of children aged five and eleven and their exposure to plasticizers before birth. There was a clear correlation between the asthma risk of the offspring and the plasticizer load of the mothers. Therefore, the experts of the German Lung Foundation women advise during pregnancy best to completely dispense with plastic dishes and containers. Food would be better kept in the glass and also in the microwave glass or porcelain dishes advised. Because in the plastics are usually phthalates contained as plasticizers, which can be relatively easily solved as chemical compounds from the plastic dishes and absorbed through the diet.
Since the phthalates are also included in cosmetics, to better adhere their fragrances, recommends the pneumologist Professor Morr also odor-free soaps and detergents during pregnancy, so the release of the „dpa“. Room fragrances and perfumed care products should also be better avoided during pregnancy. Vinyl floors in the apartment are also a hindrance, as these plasticizers may also contain, which lead to an increased risk of asthma of the children. (Fp)
