Studies: Coffee is good for the heart

09/03/2015

Whether coffee is healthy or unhealthy, experts and lovers of the invigorating drink argue for years. Several studies indicate that the drink uses more than harms and even protects the heart. However, coffee drinkers often have bad habits that harm the body.

Coffee has long been associated with health risks
For decades, coffee was considered harmful to health. Thus, excessive consumption has been associated with an increased risk of diseases such as high blood pressure or heart attack. But in recent years investigations have often come to opposite conclusions. For example, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School (both in Boston, USA), the National University of Singapore and the National University Health System (both in Singapore) published a meta-study last year comes, the coffee consumption at amounts below nine cups per day is not detrimental, but even protective effect on the cardiovascular system. In a recent article, the "World" is dedicated to various studies dealing with the health effects of coffee consumption.

Coffee can do the heart good
According to the newspaper, various studies from around the world show that coffee is not unhealthy, but has many beneficial effects on the body. For example, a large Korean study involving the doctor at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in Seoul, Yoosoo Chang (42), concludes that coffee is good for the heart. Accordingly, provide three to five cups of coffee a day that it is less likely to arteriosclerosis. A review by Boston physicians who reviewed 36 coffee-and-heart studies also found that the risk of heart disease dropped when drinking three to five cups a day. Even with high consumption, the risk did not increase.

Coffee drinkers often have bad habits
However, the Korean researchers have also stated that there is an indirect connection between unhealthy life and coffee enjoyment. In their study, they took a closer look at the lifestyle habits of coffee drinkers and found that on average, they smoke more, drink more alcohol and eat more meat. Yoosoo Chang explained that even if coffee protects the heart, please do not start drinking coffee because of your study.

coffee without milk
In the meantime, according to the "Welt", coffee has been proven to lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, scientists from the universities of Graz and Paris Descartes found out last year that coffee can trigger a kind of cleaning process of various organs. According to this, the cells of the heart, liver and in the musculature of the skeleton are cleaned and "cell scrap" eliminated. However, this only works if you drink the coffee without milk, because the contained methionine hinders the cleanup process.

Coffee drinking and cancer risk
Krasimira Aleksandrova examines how drinking coffee affects the cancer risk at the German Institute for Nutrition Research in Potsdam-Rehbrücke. Among other things, it evaluates data from more than half a million people from ten countries. In the past, it was thought that coffee could trigger certain cancers. However, according to the expert, there are indications that coffee protects against the onset of colon cancer, prostate cancer, certain brain tumors, oral cancer and the bladder. "The chemical composition of coffee is extremely complex," says Aleksandrova. The drink in addition to caffeine hundreds of other ingredients. Which could protect the body from cancer, is not clear. In their opinion, those who care about their health should think more about sports or more vegetables than about their coffee consumption.

Do not overvalue nutritional observational studies
It should be noted that many experts warn against "overvaluing nutritional observational studies". For example, "a recommendation to drink coffee for health promotion can not be made until clinical trials demonstrate its 'effectiveness'. The well-known graduate nutritionist and book author Uwe Knop had pointed out years ago that you can enjoy his coffee quietly, if he tastes a good and probably. But one should not believe in the numerous reports that "with more than four cups daily" could reduce the risk of diabetes, depression, cancer, Alzheimer's, gout, stroke and heart disease. (Ad)
