Study: Coffee does not stimulate

According to a British study, the stimulating effect of coffee is just an illusion of coffee drinkers. The performance increases according to study results only to the normal level.

Coffee brings the circulation through the caffeine content. But the daily consumption of coffee also increases the attention and performance. Researchers at the University of Bristol say no, coffee drinkers only imagine increased efficiency. Because the stimulating effect of caffeine is based on coffee habitual consumers only imagination.

Many people say in the morning, "I have to drink a coffee first, then I am approachable". But that is, if one follows the study results, everything only imagination. Because the human body develops a caffeine tolerance and after eating coffee, the organism is "raised" to the normal level. People who do not drink coffee are therefore no less efficient. On the contrary, they do not need the daily coffee to adjust the organism to the normal level of performance. Researchers led by nutritional psychologist Peter Rogers of the University of Bristol explain this effect as follows: Daily coffee consumption raises the level of those who have not gotten used to coffee until after drinking coffee.

379 subjects participated in the study. The test revealed recognizable differences between subjective alertness and actual performance. One half of the study participants were given caffeine-containing tablets, the other half were given without their knowledge only placebos (without any active ingredient). The participants, who rarely or never drank coffee, had no problems feeling "awake". Coffee drinkers often said they felt tired and flabby when given placebos. Some even said they had a headache. The strong coffee drinkers who were given caffeine tablets showed no noticeable symptoms. The caffeine caused her body to rise to normal levels.

In further investigations, attention tests were performed on the computer. Participants who consumed caffeine-containing medicines did not show improved performance over those who hardly or never drink coffee. No study group performed significantly better than the other. As the study director Peter Rogers said: "Our study shows that caffeine consumption brings no advantage - although we feel excited about it". Coffee is therefore not stimulating, but only with coffee drinkers a habituation factor to subjectively bring the Oranism in the swing. (Sb)
