Every second child in first grade has tooth decay

24/10/2013

Recent research has yielded sobering results. Caries was found in almost every second year. One in four is even in urgent need of treatment. Despite these alarming facts, more and more day-care centers are switching to brushing their teeth.

„So far, at least those children could be made daily oral care that do not touch a brush at home“, says Birgit Dohlus of the Berlin Dental Association. „A study by the State Labor Association for the Prevention of Dental Diseases (LAG) has shown that this year, 8,000 children are no longer brushing their teeth in their daycare center“, explains the boss Rainer Grahlen. That was a mistake, because the infantile tooth decay is on the rise. Paul-Georg Jost-Brinkmann from the Department of Dentistry of the Charité therefore demands: „Daily brushing must be a matter of course in all day care facilities or be again!“. The view that brushing teeth together disturbs the school's course is widespread. Especially schools in which dental care hardly takes place are particularly addressed

One of the few exceptions is the Paula-Fürst School in Charlottenburg. Under the guidance of a teacher here are 200 children daily after lunch in the specially equipped Zahnputzamt neatly on the cleaning.

Many dentists in Berlin state that the students come to school with their teeth teeth in the morning. Unhealthy break times make things even worse. Many parents do not pay much attention to their children's dental care and do not take control so seriously. No wonder that sick teeth are on the rise in childhood. (Fr)
