25 people probably infected with norovirus
As reported by the district office Ostallgäu on Saturday, 22 adolescents and three supervisors of a youth group from Northern Germany probably got infected with noroviruses in a youth hostel in Füssen, Swabia. According to the information, a surprising number of diarrhea and circulatory problems were reported to the district administration office on Friday evening. The persons concerned are members of a group of the youth fire brigade Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein.
Sudden onset gastrointestinal discomfort
According to the Office, the symptoms and the course of the disease were "very likely" to be due to an infection with highly contagious noroviruses. It is said that the ambulance and several departments of the Bavarian Red Cross were on duty to prevent further possible infections. Noroviruses are often the cause of sudden gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Health experts advise to keep away from infected people.
Sick on summer trip
According to the information, the group of 45 had stayed for a summer trip in Bavaria. But during the week more and more of them fell ill. It was reported that eight group members came to hospitals for care, with the remainder being treated on the spot. In the meantime, everyone is doing much better again. A laboratory investigation will now provide information about whether the virus was responsible for the diseases. So far, it has also remained unclear whether the illnesses originated in the group itself or whether those concerned first became ill at the youth hostel. The result is expected early next week.
Protect against infection with the dangerous viruses
Hygiene is the key to protecting yourself from infection with the dangerous viruses. Most important is frequent and careful hand washing. Especially with towels and in the toilet is to pay particular attention to hygiene. But even very thorough cleaning does not provide one hundred percent protection. Noroviruses are persistent and withstand temperatures between minus 20 and plus 60 degrees. However, scientists recently reported what can help. The experts of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) wrote that lemon juice works well against noroviruses. Accordingly, citric acid can significantly reduce the infectivity of the pathogens. (Ad)
