Federal Government declares: More and more Germans are obese.

12/15/2010

The response of the black-yellow federal government to a small request from the Alliance 90 / The Greens faction reveals that more and more people in Germany are obese. Thus, the proportion of morbidly obese (obese) men has risen from twelve percent in 1999 to 16 percent in 2009/2010. In the case of women, the proportion of obese people increased from 11 to 15 percent in the same period, according to the Federal Government's announcement.

With reference to the annual survey conducted by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) „Health in Germany currently“ (GEDA), the federal government announced that the proportion of morbidly obese women with a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 has increased significantly in both women and men. However, the number of people who are normally overweight, ie people with a BMI between 25 and 30 percent, remained virtually unchanged from 1999 until now, according to the German government's response. As in 1999, the proportion of overweight men in the years 2009/2010 remains at 44 percent and the proportion of overweight women at 29 percent, said the federal government with reference to the information provided by the Health Survey GEDA.

When commenting on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, the federal government refers to the study ”Health of children and adolescents“ (KiGGS study, 2003 to 2006), in which the latest figures are delivered. Accordingly, 8.8 percent of boys aged between three and 17 and 8.5 percent of girls of the same age group were overweight (BMI 25-30) and 6.3 percent of boys and 6.4 percent of girls were obese (BMI over 30) ), explained the federal government. Thus, the proportion of overweight children and adolescents aged 17 years and older has increased by 1.5 percent since 1999. The proportion of adipose children and adolescents, on the other hand, more than doubled with a rise of three percentage points, according to the Federal Government's response to the corresponding request from Alliance 90 / The Greens.

In addition, the Federal Government refers in its response to the high status that the governing parties have in promoting healthy lifestyles. This will be in the action plan ”IN FORM - Germany's initiative for healthy nutrition and more exercise“ clearly pursuing the goal of sustainably improving the diet and exercise habits of Germans. With a term until 2020, the action plan should contribute to this, „that adults can live healthier, children grow up healthier and benefit from a higher quality of life and increased performance in education, work and private life“, it was said in the current statement of the Federal Government.
