In the late summer extremely aggressive wasps better not blow away
Finally, the summer shows again from its best side. The hot temperatures invite you to spend your time outdoors. Unfortunately, then annoying wasps often join in, making their way over the delicious ice cream or the afternoon cake. The small insects are currently even very aggressive. Experts give helpful tips for dealing.
Especially annoying in late summer
Summertime is always wasp time. While wasps are usually harmless, they can be dangerous to those with an insect sting allergy. In late summer, the animals are usually very annoying. Experts explain how to protect from wasps and what to do in case of possible stings.
The natural cycle ends
As a statement from the Bavarian Association for the Conservation of Birds (LBV) shows, the natural cycle of most animals ends at the end of August. According to the experts, this process continues in mild weather until around the beginning of November.
During this time, "the entire wasp state dies, only the mated young queens survive and seek a shelter for the winter," explains LBV agronomist Alf Pille. The animals are now turning this course of events: until now, they only needed protein to grow their larvae, but now they are deliberately looking for sugar. "Wasps are particularly stubborn when they have their favorite food in front of them and are hungry," said the conservationist.
Do not blow away wasps
The experts advise against setting up traps or distraction feed. This would attract even more animals. Instead, the motto is: Keep calm! Hectic or panic movements near the animals should be avoided. In addition, you must not bombard wasps in any case. The carbon dioxide in the air is loud LBV an alarm signal for the animals and puts them in attack mood.
In general, significantly less wasps are on the way in most regions of Germany in this late summer than in previous years. As the German Wild Animal Foundation writes in a message, the heavy rains in the spring have simply washed away the wasps' nests. Many queens have drowned together with brood. "The heavy rain in the spring was devastating for the black and yellow insects", explains the wild bee expert Manuel Pützstück.
Cool stitches with cold compresses
But what can one do if the wasp has stabbed? If the sting is still visible, it should be removed carefully with the tweezers. Then cool the area around the stitch with cold compresses so that the swelling fades faster. As a home remedy for wasp stings are also onions or lemon slices, which are placed on the affected areas.
