Dogs should not drink meltwater
Animal Health: Dogs should not drink meltwater
Dogs should not drink meltwater in the wild to quench their thirst. As the German animal protection federation explained in Bonn, the molten water often contains dangerous bacteria and viruses which could cause infections. Although gastric acid can kill some of the pathogens, small cracks in the oral mucosa of the dog could still trigger disease in the animal.
Road salt and pollutants in the water
In cities and on busy roads could also toxic salt and pollutants have accumulated in the water. The toxins could damage the liver and cause vomiting and diarrhea. To prevent dogs from drinking the water, dog owners should always bring dog food with them to keep the animal away from harmful drinking. For longer stays in the open air or traveling, it is always advisable to always bring water with you. Special containers for the transport and for the collection of water can be purchased in a pet shop. (sb, 31.01.2011)
