Almost half of the deceased women and one quarter of the deceased men were 85 years and older.

The most common cause of death in 2015, as in previous years, was cardiovascular disease. 39% of all deaths were due to this. Of the 356,625 people who died of cardiovascular disease, there were 157,999 men and 198,626 women. Especially in older people, these diseases led to death. 92% of those with cardiovascular disease died 65 years and over. The second most frequent cause of death was cancer. Almost a quarter of all deceased (226,337 people) succumbed to cancer in 2015, including 122,916 men and 103,421 women. In men, the malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs and the respiratory organs (lung and bronchial cancer) were the most frequently diagnosed cancers. Women were also most often affected by a malignant neoplasm of the digestive system. However, the most common single diagnosis in women's cancers was breast cancer.

4% of all deaths were due to a non-natural cause of death such as injury or poisoning (36,503 deaths). In 12,868 cases (6,027 men and 6,841 women), a fall was the cause of death. A suicide ended 10 080 lives, with 73% of men almost three times as high as 27% of women.
