Great Success in Diabetes Therapy Diabetics again produce insulin on their own
In Germany alone, around 400,000 people suffer from type 1 diabetes. Patients have to inject insulin regularly because their body no longer produces this hormone. However, doctors in the USA have now achieved a sensation: According to media reports, a patient was "healed" with the help of a cell transplant. Your body produces insulin again.
Body of diabetic again produces its own insulin
Millions of people worldwide suffer from type 1 diabetes, in Germany there are about 400,000. The fact that an enormous number of Germans are affected also shows that diabetes is the second most common of the 50 most frequently searched for diseases on the internet. Only after thyroid enlargement, more Germans search, as a study recently revealed. In type 1 diabetics, the body's immune system destroys cells that produce insulin. However, this hormone is necessary so that the sugar absorbed from the diet can be transferred from the blood into the cells and processed. If there is a lack of insulin, the sugar accumulates in the blood instead, which subsequently raises blood sugar levels.
Patients have to inject insulin regularly to compensate for the deficiency of this hormone and to prevent health risks such as dementia, a stroke or heart attack. A few months ago, German researchers reported that a vaccine to protect against type 1 diabetes might be available in the future. Certain groups have already achieved positive results. Hope is now also media reports from the US, which report on the case of a diabetic who was "cured". Your body produces its own insulin again.

For more than 20 years, 43-year-old Wendy Peacock from Texas has had to constantly monitor her blood glucose levels and inject insulin. This is now past. According to a report by the Miami Herald, the woman is the first diabetes type 1 patient in the world to be "healed" with a new treatment method. Peacock had received a cell transplant in a clinical trial at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) in Miami. The doctors presented the medical miracle together with the patient at a press conference.
Cure of diabetes type 1 in sight
Peacock was reported to be the first patient in the world to receive the new method in August 2015, according to the report. Cells were implanted in their peritoneum, which measure the level of blood sugar and produce and release insulin. It is said that the patient has been symptom-free since the operation and her body is producing her own insulin again.
However, according to the doctors, their condition is not that of a non-diabetic. The 34-year-old must continue to take drugs that prevent the rejection of the implanted cells. So far, she has reported no side effects from the drugs. The attending physicians have announced that, in collaboration with other physicians worldwide, they plan to perform up to 30 more transplants over the next year. They expect that there will be a cure for type 1 patients within three to seven years. (Ad)
