Health benefits of the vegetarian diet
Doctors konkress on the health benefits of the vegetarian diet
21/09/2012
At the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, the University Outpatient Clinic for Natural Medicine, the Association of Vegetarians and the Carstens Foundation are holding a scientific conference titled "VegMed". It is about the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and scientific findings. The certified further training event will take place on December 9, 2012 in Berlin.
Scientific studies show benefits of the vegetarian diet
Recent studies show that people who eat a vegetarian diet have a lower risk of developing many diseases. This is especially true for cardiovascular disease. The advantage is that vegetarians eat more vegetables, fruits, legumes and nuts than "meat eaters". An English meta-analysis found that the vegetarian diet can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 15 to 35 percent. In addition, other studies have shown that the consumption of red meat in particular increases the risk of cancer.
Despite negative factors advantages remain
"Even eliminating other factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption or physical activity and socio-demographic parameters, the benefits of a vegetarian diet are clearly preserved". In one study, vegetarians had a 36 percent lower risk of developing a metabolic syndrome, regardless of their other lifestyle habits.
The congress addresses physicians, dieticians, health advisors and nutritionists. New study data and vegetarian diets are presented. A buffet also shows how versatile vegetarian recipes can be. A program can be downloaded here. The event is certified with CME training points of the Berlin Medical Association, the DGE, VDD and VDOE. (Sb)
