Also switch off: Permanent accessibility on holiday is hazardous to health
Anyone who is very dedicated and committed to their job can often not switch off on vacation. Many of these people live in health-enduring stress. Above all, experts see employers as responsible. Managers should be role models for health.

Stress on vacation
Actually, a vacation should make you happy and healthy. But too many people find it difficult to rest during their non-working hours. They are constantly available, check their e-mails on a regular basis or even call on the telephone. Anyone who is permanently stressed while on holiday endangers their health. Among other things, the permanent tension can lead to hypertension and weaken the immune system. Employers could help to make it easier for employees to switch off on holiday, my Austrian experts.

One in four can not recover enough
According to a report of the Chamber of Labor (AK) Upper Austria, a quarter of employees in Austria can not recover enough on vacation. Just as many are constantly available during their vacation time for the company, 14 percent control and respond regularly to their emails and phone even with customers and their colleagues. Almost every sixth person has to interrupt the holiday due to work or even break it off prematurely. This is shown by a recent evaluation of the Austrian Working Climate Index of AK Oberösterreich.

Holidays often have to be postponed due to work
Around ten percent of respondents said they can not use their entire five or six-week annual leave. With two-thirds of them, high work density is the main reason for this. According to the information, every fifth employee had to postpone a leave already agreed with the supervisor over the past two years because it required the work or because the boss wanted it that way. Workers should therefore always keep up to date with what they should know about leave entitlement.

Affected suffer more often from sleep disorders
The permanent sacrifice for the profession - even on vacation - is not a sign of productivity, according to the experts, but an expression of high communication frequency. "This constant mutual interruption and the increasing digital presentativeness, that is to constantly be in contact with the company via the smartphone, carry great dangers that often lead to mental illness such as burn-out after years of habit," said AK President Dr. med. Johann Kalliauer. In addition, people who work in their free time can switch off more severely and often suffer from sleep disorders. "That's why both sides - employers and employees - have to use their resources more responsibly and sensitively," Dr. Kalliauer.

Employer in charge
However, the main responsibility lies with the management staff and the employers. The AK president said: "It is first and foremost the responsibility of companies and executives to initiate strategies and measures against harmful behavior such as permanent availability on vacation." He continued: "bosses certainly have a role model effect Vacations are not constantly available, read everything and call constantly, then the employees do not have the feeling that they are expected to be always available. "According to health experts, relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or yoga in the mood for a relaxing holiday help. Also activities like beach volleyball, swimming, listening to music or reading are suitable. (Ad)
