Health Recall at dm due to unhealthy ingredients in organic cereal / Health News

Tropanalkaloids in this dm-muesli

Currently, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety and the dm drugstore market warn against toxins that may be present in the product "dmBio Paleo cereal, 500 g". For reasons of preventive consumer protection dm calls back the muesli.

Affected is the "dmBio Paleo muesli, 500 grams" with all expiration dates up to and including May 30, 2019. As dm informs, in the course of self-checks in the product harmful tropane alkaloids were found. These phytonutrients primarily enter the products through weeds. "Since no herbicides can be used in organic agriculture, their occurrence in cereal cultivation can not be completely excluded," writes dm in a consumer information on the recall.

Dm and the Federal Office for Consumer Protection strongly advise against eating cereals. The affected items can be returned in any dm store - regardless of whether the pack is already opened or is still closed. The customers get the purchase price refunded.

What are tropane alkaloids??

According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety, tropane alkaloids are a group of natural phytonutrients commonly found in certain nightshade family weeds. They may, for example, come from the common thorn apple (Datura stramonium L.), the black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger L.) or the belladonna (Atropa belladonna L.). At harvest, plant parts or seeds of these herbs can get into the final product and thus provide impurities.

What are the dangers of tropane alkaloids??

"Tropane alkaloids can cause temporary health problems such as blurred vision, dilated pupils, dry mouth or tiredness," warns dm. Which Tropanalkaloide were found, dm does not indicate. According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety, atropine and scopolamine are frequently found in cereal products.

Toxic to humans

Atropine and scopolamine are classified as acutely very toxic. According to the Bavarian State Office, even low intakes can affect the heart rate and the central nervous system. Typical symptoms after consumption are dizziness, headache, palpitations, nausea and vomiting. (Vb)
