Healthy grapes are now in high season
Grapes are the ideal snack in between. They provide valuable energy and also provide the body with minerals such as potassium and calcium, vitamin B6 and folic acid. The contained fiber and fruit acids stimulate the intestinal activity, bind toxins and have a positive effect on the cholesterol level. In addition, the antioxidant resveratrol is contained in the skin and in the nuclei. Grapes are tasty and healthy. (Image: guy / fotolia.com)
Grapes prefer to walk directly into the mouth. The fresh fruits can also be used for cakes and jams, fruit salad and green salads. They are the ideal companion to cheese and game and give spicy sauces a special touch. Dried as raisin they must not be missing in the cereal and in the trail mix.
The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the oldest crops. The berries grow on panicles, are round to oblong in the form and can be greenish, yellow, red or blue to black-blue colored. There are an estimated 16,000 grape varieties, most of which are used for wine production. Table grapes are cultivated worldwide from the temperate zones to the subtropics. Italy is by far the largest producer in the European Union. For fresh consumption, seedless grapes are particularly popular.
Grapes are available year round, with a peak from August to November. Domestic goods are marketed from August to October and mostly locally. Only undamaged and fully ripe goods belong in the shopping basket, as the fruits do not ripen. In the fridge in a plastic bag, grapes are unwashed for up to a week.
