Ground beetle burger manufacturer launches first insect burgers on the market
Osnabrücker develop new snack from ground beetle larvae
Whether classic with beef, chicken or a vegan vegetable patty: burgers are popular and on the menus of the fast food restaurants you will find various creations of the warm snack. Max Krämer and Baris Özel from Osnabrück in Lower Saxony now want to establish a completely new idea with their company "Bugfoundation" and bring out an insect-based burger all over Europe over the next few years. As the German Press Agency (dpa) reports, the "Bux Burger" consists of herbal ingredients and ground buffalo worm, which is the larva of the cereal beetle. "Tastes like falafel," says young entrepreneur Krämer to the "dpa".
"Bux Burger" so far only available in Belgium
The new burger is currently sold in only two restaurants in the Belgian capital Brussels, but during the year he will be available throughout Belgium in 40 other restaurants. In Germany, however, the innovative snack must not go over the counter, because as a novel food, it must first be extensively tested for its safety. Krämer reports that he first ate insects on a trip to Thailand. "I wrote about this in my bachelor thesis and came across a lot of prejudices about insects as food," continues Osnabrücker.
Insects as a healthy alternative to meat
According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), insects are part of the daily diet of two billion people worldwide and more than 1,900 species are reportedly used as food. From an expert's point of view, a number of pro-arguments speak for the consumption of insects. So they are e.g. ecologically advantageous compared to cattle, pigs or poultry, since, among other things, the rearing is significantly less harmful to the climate and the groundwater is less polluted. In addition, according to the FAO insects are healthy and nutritious, because they are rich in healthy fat, protein, vitamins, ballast and minerals.
Health hazard due to regular consumption of BigMäcs
In future, the insect burgers could be an interesting alternative for any fast-food fan who would like to do something good for his health and the environment. Because only a few months ago, the American consumer side fastfoodmenuprice.com had reported on what a Big Mac does in less than 60 minutes in our bodies. Accordingly, the ingredients of the popular burgers could cause serious health damage such as high blood pressure or heart disease with regular consumption. (No)
