Older people should be extra cautious when taking painkillers
Painkillers are supposed to help with health problems and severe pain. Researchers have now found that taking such so-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may increase the risk of heart failure.

Researchers at the University of Milano-Bicocca found in one study that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with an increased risk of heart failure. The physicians published the results of their study in the journal British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Study examines data from about ten million elderly subjects
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac, are commonly used to treat pain and inflammation, explain the physicians. The current study analyzed data from ten million people averaged 77 years old. These subjects took the above medicines and came from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany. The data collected was then compared with data from people who had not taken any such medication, the authors add.

Taking NSAIDs increases the risk of heart failure by 19 percent
The University of Milano-Bicocca experts in Italy found that so-called NSAIDs increase the risk of hospitalization for heart failure - by 19 percent. Most of the participants were older. The results of the new study do not seem to be very relevant for patients under the age of 65 years. Nevertheless, the study is very interesting for older people, say the scientists.

NSAIDs increase the risk of heart failure in patients with joint problems
The large observational study reinforces the results of earlier research. These said that some NSAIDs in patients with joint problems lead to an increased risk of heart failure. It has been known for some years that such medicines should be used with caution in patients with an increased risk of heart disease, explain the physicians. This is especially true for regular users.

Medicines should only be taken in small amounts and as short as possible
Heart and joint problems are particularly common in older patients. The current study serves as a kind of reminder for all physicians to more carefully consider prescribing NSAIDs in the future. Patients should take these medications in the lowest possible dose. In addition, the painkillers should only be used for as short a time as possible, experts suggest. Young people should not worry now if they only take ibuprofen for a short period of time. However, the drug is also problematic in younger people when they start taking ibuprofen regularly.

See a doctor if you regularly take painkillers
If you only occasionally take such medications, for example, to treat pain and sports injuries, you need not worry about the dangers of painkillers, say the doctors. However, if you as a young person regularly purchase and use such painkillers, you should consult a physician for examination and consultation, the authors advise. Taking the medication can have negative consequences, for example your kidney could be damaged. (As)
