An Englishwoman can hear for the first time in her life at the age of 39. This was made possible by special implants. The woman was born with a hereditary hearing impairment.
Woman was born with hearing disability
A 39-year-old woman from Gateshead, England can hear for the first time in her life. A Youtube video shows Joanne Milne burst into tears as a sister in a hospital in Birmingham reads her the weekdays and talks to her. Ms. Milne was born with a hereditary disability, the Usher syndrome. Usher syndrome is considered the most common cause of hereditary blind deafness. According to press reports, she was deaf by birth and also had lost her eyesight for years.
Best moment in life
Doctors used the 39-year-old cochlear implants in both ears a month ago. These are special electronic inner ear prostheses. Sometimes such aids are already used in children when a hearing aid is not sufficient. Milne called the moment when the implants were switched on the most beautiful moment in her life. As she said, voices still worked automatically. Her brain has yet to learn to process the signals. (Ad)
