For a beautiful white smile How lightening works well
In movies and on TV you almost only see people who have perfectly white teeth. And in everyday life, too, more and more people are meeting their smiles as if they were looking out of advertising. This raises the question: how do they all do that? Experts have tips on how teeth whitening works.
White teeth as a beauty ideal
Especially stars like Heidi Klum, George Clooney and Co are beaming at us with porcelain-white teeth from billboards and from television. But more and more people from everyday life try this beauty ideal - often successful - emulate. The teeth discolour in the course of life. The increasing age plays a role, but also different lifestyle factors. About what different methods of brightening really bring, experts explain in a message of the news agency dpa.
Natural discoloration in the course of life
The tooth color with which one is born, is different with each humans. It is genetically predisposed and becomes more and more yellow in the course of life. But some life circumstances also play a role. For example, the individual tooth color changes due to the consumption of foods rich in pigments, such as red wine, coffee, black tea, beetroot or blueberries. "Such deposits are deposited in the enamel surface and are difficult to get down again", explained Helmut Kesler, dentist and board member of the Dentists' Chamber Berlin.
Teeth are not whiter than toothpaste
Allegedly, so-called whitening toothpastes should make the teeth whiter by removing such deposits, but in the end it reinforces the re-coloration effect. "The abrasive components of such toothpaste usually only cause the teeth to become rougher and to store in new pigments," says Kesler. In addition, toothpaste can never make teeth whiter than they originally are. Annegret Blume, managing director of the cosmetics commission of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), warned in the agency report against excessive use: "Anyone who uses such toothpaste excessively risks attacking their teeth with too much abrasion."
Regular thorough brushing
Dirk Kropp from the proDente initiative recommends regular, thorough brushing as the most effective natural remedy for lighter teeth. Dr. med. dent. MSc. MSc. Thomas Jung, Head of Dr. Ing. Jung Dental Clinic in Pfungstadt, had in an earlier message some nutrition tips for a bright smile ready. Thus, for example, hard foods such as nuts, apples and carrots or even cheese can help keep your teeth healthy. A professional dental cleaning in the dental office can have a whitening effect. Incidentally, there are also subsidies from about every second fund.
Bleaching effect can be disappointing
If that's not enough, according to the dpa message on the way to Hollywood laughter only two options remain: bleaching or veneers. In the former method, the teeth are bleached by chemical means, usually hydrogen peroxide. It is precisely regulated how much of it may be included in the over-the-counter whitening strips or gels. "The European Cosmetics Regulation requires that a whitening product may contain a maximum of 0.1 percent hydrogen peroxide," explained Blume. However, the hoped-for whitening effect can be disappointing because of the low concentration, as Dirk Kropp explained. He also warned, "If whitening strips are used improperly, chemical agents can irritate the mucosa, which is the gums."
Costs up to 1,000 euros
Although bleaching at the dentist excludes such disadvantages, but is also correspondingly more expensive. The costs are estimated by Kesler depending on the practice up to 1,000 euros. The teeth are treated in the visible area of the upper and lower jaw. "I put on an oxygen gel and irradiate the teeth with a lamp," said Helmut Kesler. "The light activates the oxygen, which has a bleaching effect." However, whitening is not an option for all patients. On the other hand speak periodontitis, fillings in the anterior region or root canal-treated teeth.
Blend discolored areas
Then only veneers, so-called veneers could help. "These are ceramic bowls that are glued to the tooth," explained Kesler. The tooth must first be ground down a bit, then the veneer veneers discolored areas. Expenses of between € 600 and € 700 will be charged per tooth, estimates the dentist. If all this is too much effort, too expensive or too risky, you should take an example from Jürgen Vogel. The charismatic German actor likes to show his laughter and often - despite teeth that are not quite perfect. (Ad)
