More time with the grandchildren: grandparents as support in everyday life
Although grandma and grandpa would like to spend time with their grandchildren, sometimes they are not asked about it. Grandparents should not be afraid to offer their help. This can lead to a "win-win-win situation" for all those involved: the children are happy, and grandma and Opi too, and the parents are relieved in their everyday lives.

Offer uncomplicated support
If grandparents want to see their grandchildren more often, they should try not to put stress and time pressure on their parents, but best offer their help in everyday life. "This can be, for example, in the housework or as a driving service," said Christine Sowinski, a graduate psychologist from the Board of Trustees German Altershilfe in a message from the news agency dpa. Most parents like uncomplicated support. By contrast, making demands and putting pressure on the parents does not make sense.

Everyone involved benefits
The autonomy of parents should always be accepted. Even in education issues, grandma and grandpa should not interfere. "The more relaxed it is with the grandparents, the more often they are used," said Sowinski. The seniors can suggest, among other things, that the grandchildren can come for baking or invite the little ones to a zoo visit. "These are all things that cost parents a lot of time in everyday life," explained the expert. These are usually very grateful if someone takes this away. The crucial point should be whether the grandchildren also like to spend time with the grandparents. This is usually the case, as grandma and grandfather are often the ones who, for example, watch over a bit too much chocolate or longer television.

Grandmas play a big role in evolution
How important the care of the children, especially by the grandmother, was already part of several scientific studies. For example, several years ago researchers from the US and Australia reported that grandmothers extend the lives of children through their care. And just a few months ago, US scientists published a study that concluded that without grandmas there would be no longer pair relationships. The causes are rooted in evolution and also have to do with the help of the grandmothers in education.
