Research Continuous WhatsApp usage Expression of lower self-esteem

The impact that modern communication channels have on self-esteem has so far been poorly understood. However, recent research has come to the conclusion that the use of social networks like Facebook is affecting mental well-being. Now, Fresenius University has published the work of a graduate in which the frequency of use of so-called instant messengers has been linked to reduced self-esteem.
The work on Applied Psychology by Fernanda Heinke, a graduate of the Department of Economics & Media at the Hochschule Fresenius in Düsseldorf, has examined the relationship between the frequency of use of instant messengers and self-esteem. The result was clear. "Those with little self-esteem often communicate via Facebook and WhatsApp," reports the university.

Smartphone a constant companion
Modern communication technologies enable communication in a simple and extremely fast way. The smartphone as a constant companion suggests that we are never alone when we do not want it, reports the study author. While not all people write the same amount, instant messaging is a part of everyday communication. In her work, Fernanda Heinke explored the question of "whether the groups that write much or little differ in their self-esteem."
Effects on self-esteem, life satisfaction and sociability
In the study, the researcher investigated possible connections between the intensity of use of instant messengers and life satisfaction, self-esteem and the shyness or sociability of a person. To do so, it interviewed 267 people between the ages of 14 and 71 via the Internet anonymously using a standardized questionnaire. Among other things, the participants should indicate how many minutes they actively use instant messengers per day, such as Facebook or WhatsApp.
Low self-value Cause of high usage?
The study author noted that there is a connection between intensity of use and self-esteem ... "The lower the self-esteem of a person, the more messages are written daily"; reports the University of Fresenius from the study results. For people with low self-esteem, intensive use of instant messengers and the resulting communication with other people can be a way to increase self-esteem, Heinke explains the established connection.
