Researchers warn: Excessive jogging hurts

04/02/2015

Regular jogging is healthy, but only if it is not excessive. If you overdo it with running, it harms your cardiovascular system in the long term. This conclusion was reached by Danish researchers in a long-term study. Joggers should not run too fast either.

It depends on the right amount
As in so many areas of life, jogging also depends on the right level. As reported by news agency AFP, a study from Denmark concludes that running is only really good for the long term if „light“ or „moderate“ is jogged. The results of the investigation were recently published in the journal „Journal of the American College of Cardiology“ published. Accordingly, one to just under two and a half hours of jogging per week, ideally distributed over no more than three running units, optimal. When running should not be too fast pace.

Lowest mortality rate among the „light“ joggers
The researchers from Copenhagen had collected data from 1,098 joggers and 3,950 healthy non-joggers for the 12-year long-term study. They found that the mortality rate was below „excessive“ Joggern was almost as high as the non-joggers. Both „light“ Joggers had the lowest mortality rate recorded. Then follow the „moderate“ Jogger. Peter Schnohr from the Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen explained that the results indicated that very strenuous jogging could pose health risks over decades. Those seeking to increase life expectancy are advised to jog just a few times a week at a moderate pace. Schnohr warned: „Anything beyond that is not only superfluous, it can even hurt.“

Extend service life by three years
A study from the state of Texas with 55,000 adults came to similar conclusions last year. According to the University of Iowa, daily walking on the order of five to ten minutes is as good for the health as is an intense jogging workload of three hours a week. Accordingly, the regular running of short or long distances extends the service life on average by three years compared to the non-runners. The US researchers also found that the running speed is not of great importance. Thus, those who "walk with less than ten kilometers per hour, promote their health well as fast joggers". The scientists pointed out "not raising the bar".

Health promoting effect of running
The health-promoting effect of running has often been the focus of scientific research. Especially against cardiovascular diseases, jogging is beneficial, according to studies. In addition, according to health experts, regular running can help reduce stress and also help to strengthen the bones, thereby preventing, for example, osteoporosis. It also plays an important role in weight loss and thus reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes or obesity. However, experts have often pointed out that it should not be exaggerated with the sport, since over-exertion threatens, among other things, permanent states of exhaustion, fatigue and exhaustion.
