The study involved 78 predominantly female volunteers with functional constipation. They were given 100g of fig paste or equivalent placebo three times daily for eight weeks before meals.

The intestinal transit time was checked X-ray technically with orally administered contrast medium capsules before and after the treatment phase. In addition, symptoms caused by the constipation were interrogated by questionnaire, i.a. the frequency of bowel movements, the time and effort required to defecate, the completeness of evacuation, stool consistency, stool volume, abdominal discomfort, and their alleviation.

After 8 weeks, the time of intestinal transit was significantly shortened in both experimental groups compared to the baseline, with the fig group significantly better than the placebo group. The fig paste changed stool consistency and abdominal discomfort more effectively than placebo paste. The other parameters showed no differences. No adverse reactions were reported.
