Faulty Breast Implants: Universitätsklinik Essen partially informed affected patients after one year

01/06/2012

After the recall campaign for breast implants of the company Rofil in 2010, the gynecological department of the University Hospital Essen responded immediately. No further implants from the manufacturer were used. However, affected patients were informed about the defective breast implants and possible health hazards only after one year. According to the clinic, according to the current state of knowledge, no patient would have suffered any damage to their health.

Rofil breast implants are identical to PIP silicone pads
The breast implants used in Essen University Hospital are identical to the silicone pads of the French manufacturer PIP. This has come under massive criticism, as he is said to have used for his silicone pillows instead of the high-quality, expensive medical silicone, cheap industrial silicone. Breast implants are suspected of being less stable, faster to tear and causing cancer if damaged.

The French company is assumed to have acted out of pure greed for profit. According to prosecutors in Marseille, the industrial silicone used cost only about one tenth of the proper silicone gel. Although immediately after the discovery of the scandal, the use, marketing and export of silicone cushions was banned throughout Europe, however, the flawed, unhealthy breast implants are still in the bodies of tens of thousands of women.

Frauenklinik used silicone implants from Rofil in around 500 women
Until the Rofil silicone implants were recalled in the spring of 2010, about 500 women were treated with the defective implants at the Women's Hospital of the University Hospital Essen. After the recall of the manufacturer, the clinic responded immediately and used no further Rofil implants.

Unfortunately, the clinic informed some patients only in April 2011, one year after the recall of the manufacturer, about the faulty and potentially health-threatening implants. The clinic justifies its approach in its current opinion with a precise balance „between the safety of the patients and a possible uncertainty. "Patients would be informed once a year about the control examinations and advised on the health risks, but the affected women were not informed in a separate letter about the defective implants.

The clinic further explained that the process of weighing up took a long time. „ As far as this has led to uncertainty, we regret this very much, "said the clinic in her statement." It was crucial that the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices as the competent authority, no recommendation to remove the silicone implants would have been.
