08/03/2011

Search experts warn against alcohol in children's snacks. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (Ages) has analyzed several food products and found that many children's snacks and foods contain hidden alcohol.

The result of the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Security surprised and shocked at the same time. Many of the food products tested contain alcohol and only two out of 19 of the sweets have been alcohol-free, Ages reports.

Baked goods and sweets often contain alcohol
Normally, child snacks and children's foods should be as rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients as possible and contribute to a healthy and balanced diet of adolescents. However, as the Ages found in their investigation, this is not always the case. Instead, baked goods and sweets in particular contained an extremely high alcohol content, the experts report. For example, a hamburger bread from the supermarket contained 25.6 grams of alcohol per kilogram, which roughly corresponded to the alcohol content of two double schnapps, said the Ages. Even the children's snacks would often contain alcohol. The testers have noted a peak of 12 grams of alcohol per kilogram, with children's foods also having a particular impact on baked goods and sweets. In particular, in croissants and the very popular with children biscuit cake was partly a high alcohol content has been found, explained the Ages. In terms of sweets, only two of the 19 products tested would not contain alcohol.

Search experts warn against hidden alcohol content
Search experts have repeatedly warned about the alcohol content of some foods. Although this must be specified in the list of ingredients on the packaging, but seemingly seemingly harmless appearing articles consumers often waive an appropriate control. The amounts of alcohol contained are so low that they show no effect in healthy adults. But the child-like organism responds far more sensitively, so that, according to search experts, adolescents should generally abstain from consuming alcoholic foods. Even with addicted people can even the smallest amounts of alcohol unfold a fatal effect, warn the experts and advise them to renounce the corresponding products. To make sure that alcohol is not consumed unknowingly, in any case, the list of ingredients should be thoroughly studied, recommends the Ages. For bakery products, however, this can sometimes be a problem, as there is not always a packaging with the corresponding list of ingredients. Here only help the inquiries at the bakery and in case of doubt the waiver. (Fp)
