Dentists have expressed concern in recent years: More and more infants suffer from tooth decay. The Federal Dental Association (BZÄK) said last year that now about ten to 15 percent of infants suffer from such a so-called Nuckelflaschenkaries. Pregnant women should pay attention to oral hygiene
According to a news agency dpa, experts at an event on the health of children's teeth in Frankfurt pointed out that expectant mothers should not shun the dentist. Oral hygiene in pregnancy is of particular importance anyway, as it involves physical changes that do not spare teeth and gums. The oral cavity, for example, responds to hormonal changes, which include an increased, acidic salivation and morning sickness, particularly sensitive.
Unhealthy bacteria mix can be transferred to the baby
The worse the gums and teeth of the mother are, the greater, according to the agency, the risk that the children get sick. Andrea Thumeyer, chairwoman of the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Jugendzahnpflege in Hessen, explained that an unhealthy bacterial mix in the mouth or bacterial pathogen would be transferred from the parents to the baby.
