Simple nutritional recommendation facilitates weight loss

04/03/2015

Increasing the fiber content in the diet could help patients with metabolic disorders who have difficulty completing complex dietary recommendations. This was the result of American scientists.

The current dietary recommendations of the professional societies provide in addition to a calorie reduction, a higher proportion of fruits, wholegrain, fish and poultry in the diet. Red meat and refined sugar should rather be avoided. These recommendations are not always easy to translate into concrete eating habits, the authors of the study fear. Therefore, they have been looking for a simpler "formula".

The researchers accompanied 240 patients with a metabolic syndrome, which they divided into two groups. Subjects were now feeding for 12 months on different dietary recommendations. One group only increased the fiber content in the diet to 30 grams per day, while the control group changed their diet according to the guidelines of the American guideline (AHA).

Patients who were eating according to the AHA guidelines showed greater weight loss and less developed diabetes. However, subjects who only consumed more ballasts also achieved good results in terms of weight loss and metabolic parameters. The study can be found here. (Pm)
