11/11/2013
Worldwide, diabetes mellitus is on the rise. Even before Bavaria, this development does not stop, but the increase in the disease here is below the national average, according to the press release of the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH) on Monday. Accordingly, the number of KKH insured persons affected in Bavaria increased by 17.6 per cent from 2006 to 2012, while the federal average saw an increase in illnesses by 27 per cent.
On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day on November 14, the KKH has also informed in its current newsletter about the development of the worldwide diabetes cases and comes to the conclusion that „Diabetes is no longer just a growing problem in western countries“ is. Because with the spread of „modern“ Fast-food food culture has put people all over the world in weight, which also brings an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. While around 371 million people are currently affected globally, experts from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimate that by 2030, 435 million people will already have diabetes, reports the KKH.
The KKH has also cited an international ranking of the countries with the most diabetes diseases, citing the figures of the IDF. China is in first place with around 90 million diabetic people, India in second place (around 61 million diabetics) and the US is in third place (around 23 million illnesses). Germany follows according to the KKH „in twelfth place of sinister statistics“ (5.2 million diabetics). In terms of population (about eight percent of Germans suffer from diabetes), however, the disease risk in this country is similar to that in India. (Fp)
