Heavy Ebola epidemic in West Africa
Over 10,000 deaths were claimed by the severe Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Tens of thousands became infected. Numerous international organizations provided on-site assistance. Some patients were also taken to Western countries for treatment. Some of them found that although they had typical Ebola symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting or even internal and external bleeding, they did not suffer from the deadly infectious disease. However, in one patient treated at the Frankfurt University Hospital, the diagnosis was clear: a medical doctor from Uganda had become infected with Ebola during an emergency operation in Sierra Leone and had been taken to Germany. For seven weeks he wrestled with death until the disease was finally defeated.

Some patients were treated in western countries
On November 19 of last year, he was dismissed as cured. "The former patient enjoys today's best health and is still in regular contact with the doctors who have treated him in Frankfurt," said a spokesman for the university hospital told the German Press Agency. He was one of very few Ebola sufferers who were brought to Germany for treatment. According to the hospital, the Ugandan man was very poor on his arrival on 3 October. According to dpa his condition was "critical", he suffered from a multi-organ failure. Among other things, he received intensive care therapy and an experimental drug at the Frankfurt hospital. The special isolation ward where he was treated requires more than 30 employees a day to care for a single patient. The treatment costs for the Ebola patient were estimated at 815,000 euros. The university hospital and the Italian aid organization, for which the doctor worked, had agreed on a comparison regarding the carrying of the costs, the last installment has since been settled. (Ad)
