10.02.2011

Every day, in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse alone, at least 3,000 blood products are needed for the medical care of patients. Since blood can not be artificially produced, donating blood is of vital importance and without alternative. The blood donation service of the German Red Cross (DRK) has pointed in a recent press release on the importance of blood donations for the medical care of patients and the population called for blood donation.

15,000 voluntary blood donations are required daily
„Donating blood is an invaluable service that allows donors to help seriously ill patients recover or give life“, it says on the website of the DRC blood transfusion service. Since 1952, free blood donations to the German Red Cross have ensured patient care. To meet this care responsibility, the blood donation service relies daily on nationwide 15,000 volunteers who are willing to donate part of their blood. In principle, every healthy person between the ages of 18 and 71 years can donate blood to the DRC, but first donors must not be older than 64 years and all blood donors must weigh more than 50 kilograms. The blood donation itself lasted about 15 minutes, with the registration, medical preliminary examination and the subsequent snack on the spot donors should plan a good hour for the blood donation, so the message of the DRC. According to the experts, up to six blood donations per year are possible in men and up to four blood donations in women per year. Interested parties can find detailed information on the blood donation and the possible appointments on site under the toll-free DRK service hotline on 0800-1194911 and on the website of the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service at http://www.blutspende.de.

DRK wants to protect lives of lifesavers
With an extraordinary campaign, the DRC is currently thanking all blood donors until 20 March 2011 and is trying to increase participation in blood donation appointments a bit more. Smoke alarms are to protect the lives of the lifesavers, so the message of the DRC. Each blood donor will therefore receive a smoke alarm during the promotion period as a thank-you for the life-saving commitment. So the DRC wants to contribute to protect the lives of the donors, the Red Cross explained its current action. (Fp)
