13/01/2012

Hoarseness can have various causes - from rather harmless overloads of the vocal cords on inflammation of the laryngeal flap to tumors. In case of cough-induced hoarseness, sufferers should urgently save their voice and talk as little as possible in order to avoid an increase in complaints, said Leif Erik Walther from the German Professional Association of Otolaryngologists.

Hoarseness is characterized by a harsh, busy or flat voice and can be caused by various factors. If the cause of the symptoms is a common cold and sufferers suffer from dry coughing and difficulty swallowing at the same time, according to the expert from the German Professional Association of Otolaryngologists it is best for them to remain silent and to absorb as much fluid as possible.

Silence in hoarseness
The already irritated vocal cords would continue to be strained while talking, which makes it difficult to heal the symptoms, stressed Leif Erik Walther. Whispering is also prohibited, as it also causes irritation of the vocal cords, which can lead to an increase in symptoms. Instead, according to the expert, those affected should drink as much as possible, ideally in the form of herbal tea. In addition, the inhalation of saline or saline solutions may be beneficial to recovery, as it moisturizes the mucous membranes and the disease germs can be better warded off. Due to the dry air in heated rooms, the symptoms of hoarseness tend to increase, which is why appropriate symptoms should be taken to ensure that there is sufficient humidity. Here, for example, damp cloths on the radiators can help.

If the hoarseness persists, consult a specialist
Hoarseness should usually resolve within a few days, taking into account the advice of the ENT specialist Leif Erik Walther. If the symptoms last longer or become worse, a visit to the specialist is urgently recommended, emphasized Walther. For cause of hoarseness in such cases, for example, a laryngitis, vocal cord inflammation or pharyngitis. In the case of young children, caution is generally required in the case of young children. If this is accompanied by difficulty breathing and high fever, the little ones should be examined by an ambulance, since a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the laryngeal lid could be present, explained the Walther.

Home remedies for hoarseness
On naturopathic basis, different home remedies for hoarseness offer, among other things, essential oils of peppermint, thyme, lavender or pine needles are used. Also, a handkerchief placed next to the pillow and drizzled with a few drops of eucalyptus oil can have an extremely positive effect on cold-induced hoarseness. In addition, the therapy with Schuessler salts, healing herbs and gemstones is attributed to a relief of hoarseness. Teas from Icelandic moss, mallow leaves, marshmallow root, coltsfoot and chamomile are particularly suitable for combating hoarseness. Again, however, the note is that in case of worsening or stopping the symptoms, urgently an ENT doctor should be consulted, as may be more serious diseases cause hoarseness. (Fp)
