Dr. Google The 50 most searched diseases on the net / Health News
With an average of 294,000 searches per month, thyroid enlargement is by far the most sought-after disease of Germans on the Internet. Only then, in second and third place, are the common diseases diabetes (140,220 searches per month) and hemorrhoids (127,400 searches per month). This is the surprising result of the study "Praxis Dr. med. Internet ", which has been published by Central Krankenversicherung. The study is based on an analysis of more than 41.2 million Google searches throughout Germany (period 11 / 2013-10 / 2014) and also provides information about the German disease search behavior.

According to the study, Hamburgers, residents of Berlin and Berlin, with an average of 1 to 1.18 searches per inhabitant (age: 14-75 years), are the most frequently informed about diseases on the Internet nationwide. The least common is the disease Googling, however, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. According to the Central Study, on average there are only 0.3 to 0.44 disease searches per inhabitant per year in the eastern German states.

With her study "Praxis Dr. Internet ", however, goes one step further and determined, based on the most wanted diseases of the Germans, how the quality of the health information published on the internet is determined. For this purpose, a Central medical team analyzed a total of 100 guide pages by means of a comprehensive website check and, after examining 24 criteria, came to a sobering conclusion: More than 30 percent of the websites rated "poor" or even "insufficient". Across all 100 websites, the average grade "sufficient" (4+) was scored. "With about 80 percent of Internet surfers looking for health information on the net, this result is more than alarming," explains Dr. Markus Homann, Head of Health Management at Central Krankenversicherung.

Here, according to Homann threaten that health surfers on the basis of false information even create diagnoses and treat yourself in the worst case. "In the case of health information on the Internet, one has to be meticulous and strict in terms of patient safety. Most offers, on the other hand, are incomplete, flawed and often leave the seeker without any sort of classification. "The health manager therefore advocates binding standards for health information in the network.

THE MOST WANTED DISEASES OF GERMANS
Chronic diseases, mental illness and socially taboo diseases lead the top 10 ranking of the most sought-after diseases of the Germans. In addition to diabetes, high blood pressure, ADHD and depression with hemorrhoids and anorexia, two diseases are among the top 10 in taboo diseases and obviously have a much higher societal relevance than the number of actual diagnoses by doctors suggests.

The survey is based on a catalog of illnesses based on public diagnostic statistics and the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of physicians. It includes both the diseases most frequently diagnosed in German medical practices as well as the most important taboo diseases, which are much less likely to lead to a doctor's visit.

Why thyroid enlargement is the frontrunner in the ranking and that more than twice as often as the widespread disease diabetes is being searched for on the internet, Dr. med. Markus Homann, Head of Health Management at Central: "The causes of thyroid disease are as diverse as the therapeutic approaches. Thus, the uncertainty and the need for information among the patients are very high. "According to Homann, the particularly high relevance especially for mental illnesses and taboo diseases makes it clear how important it is to support patients and relatives with good medical Internet content and, in addition to this To motivate a doctor's visit.

HERE THE HEALTH SURFERS LIVE
More than 41.2 million times the Germans searched for diseases on the Internet within one year. Most of the disease seekers per inhabitant come from Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen. The bottom is formed by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. According to Central, it is not just socio-demographic factors such as differences in age and education as well as technology and internet access that are of great importance to the population. "This is the case in the urban environment of the city states per capita highest and leads to more practice visits, diagnoses and disease research, "explains Dr. Homann.

REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN DISEASE BEHAVIOR
While the top 10 illnesses are searched in nearly all federal states similarly frequently, on the following ranks partly substantial differences arise. For example, Brandenburg and Berlin have an above-average disease-seeking volume for breast cancer compared to the national average (see table below). In Hamburg and Bremen, it is not only the disease that is most frequently searched for in the network, residents of the two city states are also more likely to seek psychosomatic illnesses. Patients suffer from various physical ailments, but for which no physical causes can be found. Hamburg and Berlin also have the most Google searches for acne compared to the national average. And finally, Berliners often find out more about HIV on the Internet.
