Diets Low Carb works more than high carb?
Diets: Low Carb Better Than High Carb?
04/22/2014
With the approaching summer, more and more people want to lose some of the winter bacon and therefore booze diets. In recent years, so-called low-carb diets, which involve a low carbohydrate diet, have become more and more popular. An expert has now compared several of these diets.
Low carb diets are in vogue
The temperatures are rising, the summer is approaching and more and more people want to return soon to their bathing figure and get rid of the winter bacon. For years, the so-called low-carb diets are in the trend, which is about a low carbohydrate diet. However, these nutritional concepts are still opposite to the high-carb principle. Scientific studies on the success of low carb are still rare, but an expert has now compared several of these diets together, as the Austrian news agency APA reports.
Different diets compared
According to Bernhard Ludvik from the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University Department of Internal Medicine III in Vienna (AKH), on the sidelines of a lecture, it was clear that the carbohydrate reduction was positive. He has compared various low carb diets (Atkins Diet, Mediterranean Diet, High Protein and Glycemic Index). Although long-term studies would be missing to prove the health benefit, but the fact is that low carb has a favorable effect right at the beginning. However, according to a study presented by Ludvik (2005 to 2007), other diets perform similarly well.
Fat-reduced diet scores the worst
Three diets were observed for two years: a diet that significantly reduced carbohydrates, a Mediterranean diet rich in fish, poultry, vegetables, nuts and olive oil, and a reduced fat diet. In the first six months, the weight loss was reduced The low-carb diet had been significantly better, but after twelve months it came to a balance between this and the Mediterranean diet. Worst was the cut in low-fat diet, even if so the weight could be reduced.
High meat consumption carries health risks
A diet that is low on carbohydrates and high in protein, but according to experts, also has several disadvantages. The protein-stressed diet is often associated with high meat consumption, which carries health risks. For example, the consumption of red meat is associated with an increased risk of cancer, and high-fat meat plays a role in the development of cardiovascular disease through the promotion of high blood lipid levels. As nutrition experts also emphasize, a meat-rich diet often causes more uric acid to form in the body, which in the long term can lead to kidney stones or gout in some people.
Since the 1980s, fast food enjoys great popularity
The intake of carbohydrates almost doubled between 1960 and the 1990s. According to Ludvik, there has been a particularly strong increase since the 1980s, especially with regard to simple carbohydrates, such as sugar. Since then, fast food has enjoyed great popularity, as well as corn syrup, which is mixed into soft drinks, for example. At the same time, diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer have been associated with these dietary habits. Ludvik explained: „The consumption of complex carbohydrates, as we always propagate, is significantly lower.“ These are starchy foods that keep blood sugar levels stable over time, such as vegetables or whole grains.
Nordic Diet for Northern Europeans
Relatively new at the fair of diets is the „Nordic Diet“, developed by Rene Redzepi for residents of the northern European countries, so that they can increasingly access regional food. Ludvik explained that it combines lots of fish, vegetables and fruits in the form of berries with whole grains and low-fat dairy products, as well as rapeseed oil. (Sb)
