Glucomannan is sold in pharmacies and drugstores mostly in the form of powders and capsules. Those who prefer a more natural intake can take glucomannans in the form of glass noodles (for example Shirataki). It is important that when taking capsules and powders not the specified amounts are exceeded and sufficient water is drunk, otherwise it can cause stomach problems, a bloated stomach or shortness of breath due to the violent swelling effect.

Are glucomannans harmful??

The European Food Safety Authority examined in a study in 2017 whether glucomannans are harmful to health. The Panel concluded that the use of Konjac is not harmful if the total intake from all sources remains below three grams of glucomannan per day. At the nutritional examination, some adults who took a dose of three grams of glucomannan a day for 12 weeks experienced mild discomfort such as diarrhea or constipation. Otherwise no side effects could be detected. (Vb)
