Avoid direct skin contact with epoxy resins
If you work with materials at work or as a hobby craftsman, you should always protect yourself. It threatens health hazards. For example, epoxy resins can lead to bad skin allergies if you come into direct contact with them.
Severe allergies in direct skin contact possible
Even though most people have never heard of epoxy resins, many construction workers, as well as hobby craftsmen, now deal with the material relatively often. These synthetic resins are used, for example, to coat floors or walls or to protect facades from corrosion. As the news agency dpa reports, the danger of the material is that it can trigger severe allergies in direct skin contact. The Berufsgenossenschaft der Bauwirtschaft (BG Bau) has pointed out that every year thousands of people fall ill because of epoxy resins and the professional associations register around 250 new cases each year.
Inhaling the vapors can damage the nervous system
If no protective clothing is worn, skin burns may occur within a few days. Not only the skin, but also the eyes are endangered. In addition, bad, chronic skin allergies or severe skin problems with wounds, inflammation and itching can be the result. As BG Bau writes on its website, inhaling solvent vapors can also cause headaches and damage other parts of the body, such as the nervous system.
Always wear protective clothing
To protect the skin, always wear gloves when handling epoxy resins. Recommended here are special chemical protective gloves, rather unsuitable are those made of fluororubber. In addition, construction workers should always wear protective suits, such as overalls or aprons, as well as goggles. The Employers' Liability Insurance Association also recommends that employees inquire with their employer as to whether the use of epoxy-free products or replacement procedures without the use of hazardous chemicals is possible.
