The most important dental care tips How good oral hygiene works
Nothing prevents tooth decay, gingivitis and toothache as well as regular brushing. A conscientious oral hygiene should therefore be encouraged from an early age. In the dental care, it depends, inter alia, on the technology.
To prevent tooth decay and toothache
According to experts, regular brushing is the most effective way to efficiently prevent tooth decay and prevent gingivitis and toothache. It also depends heavily on the right technology. Shaking and brushing is particularly useful, according to dentists. You should also clean the interdental spaces at least once a day.
From childhood on
A conscientious oral hygiene can not start soon enough. Milk teeth already need a lot of care. Parents are advised to check their offspring's dental care until the end of elementary school. The Fifth German Oral Health Study, which has just been presented by the Federal Dental Association (BZÄK) and the Federal Dental Association (KZBV), shows that dental hygiene has improved a lot.
Dental health of Germans has improved
According to the study, the Germans today care for their teeth much better than 20 years ago. This is also reflected in specific figures: "Eight out of ten of the 12-year-old children (81 percent) today are caries-free. The number of caries-free dentition has doubled in the years from 1997 to 2014, "says the study.
Improvements were not only in the youngest: "Only half as many younger adults (35- to 44-year-olds) have in comparison to the year 1997, a caries disease of the tooth root."
Tips for a conscientious oral hygiene
In order for the positive trend to continue, here are some tips for a conscientious dental care help. Dirk Kropp from the initiative proDente gives an overview in a message from the dpa news agency. Very important is the timing: Although the teeth should actually be cleaned after each meal, but this is not always feasible. Therefore, according to Kropp: at least twice a day.
Best after breakfast and especially after dinner. Dental care is much more important in the evening than the next morning. "If it works, you should wait 30 minutes, especially if you have taken acidic drinks or food," said the expert. If this is not possible, clean the teeth immediately after eating, because cleaning is more important than waiting.
The brushing should take on average two minutes, with some groups such as seniors or children, but also more time may be needed. Once a day you should also clean the interdental spaces.
Experts recommend the KAI technique
Experts usually recommend the so-called KAI technique. As Kropp explains, this means that first the occlusal surfaces are cleaned, then the outer surfaces and then the inside of the teeth. However, this is just an orientation. "It's important to set up a system to brush your teeth as if you were asleep, the process should be automated."
At the bi-annual checkup with the dentist or with the professional tooth cleaning one can inquire whether well enough was cleaned. There are sometimes used dye tablets, which provide information about where the teeth are not optimally cleaned.
Too much pressure during brushing is discouraged, as this may damage the enamel. "The pressure should be 150 grams, anyone can try that with a kitchen scale."
The right equipment
As a rule, dentists recommend brushing with soft to medium-hard, rounded bristles and a short head. These also make it easier to reach the back teeth. Whether manually or electrically, according to Kropp in principle not so important: "Both need a certain brushing technique to thoroughly clean the teeth."
According to the experts, the toothpaste should contain fluoride - 500 ppm in children and 1,500 ppm in adults. So-called whitening toothpastes with coarse cleaning bodies can damage the tooth enamel and are therefore not recommended according to Kropp. Good quality does not have to be expensive. Recently, the consumer magazine "Öko-Test" reported that cheap toothpaste is often better than branded toothpaste. (Ad)
