Bad suspicion: The diabetes drug "Avandia" leads to deadly heart disease?
According to the online edition of The New York Times, the diabetes drug "Avandia" may cause fatal heart disease. The New York Times (NYT) refers to an internal report by the US government. According to the report, the drug "Avandia" of the pharmaceutical company "GlaxoSmithKline" cause fatal heart disease. According to NYT, in the third quarter of 2009 alone, the active ingredient rosiglitazone caused 304 deaths. Rosiglitazone is an active ingredient ingredient of Avandia.
The internal US Government Report recommends taking the diabetes compound Avandia off the market immediately. Instead, other medications should be prescribed to Diabtes patients. According to the NYT, the internal report said it could prevent around 500 heart attacks and 300 heart failures per month in the US. Two US senators accuse the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline to have known before 2007 of the possible heart problems.
Rosiglitazone is intended to stabilize the blood sugar content of type 2 diabetics. Two years ago, there were clinical indications that the drug rosiglitazone could damage the heart. But then the manufacturer had referred to the incomplete study results. With a correct dosage, the drug is safe.
