Diabetes of diabetes run away
Endurance sports against diabetes
04/29/2014
Hundreds of millions of people worldwide suffer from diabetes. According to estimates, over six million are expected to be alone in Germany. The majority of them are treated with drugs against the metabolic disease. But healthy nutrition, especially in combination with exercise, has an influence on the so-called diabetes.
Run away from diabetes
It is estimated that around six million Germans have type 2 diabetes. The main risks of the metabolic disorder include overweight, obesity and lack of exercise. With healthy nutrition and sports you can not only prevent the disease, but by physical activity, you can even relieve diabetes so much that often no more drugs are needed. So you can just run away from diabetes? Even if medicine thinks that this is not possible, Professor Ralf Lobmann from the Bürgerhospital in Stuttgart has issued a conference presentation on diabetes mellitus type 2 (adult onset diabetes) with this headline: „Run away from diabetes“. As the Medical Director of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Geriatrics said, of course, it was a blatant exaggeration to attract attention to the subject, but it was „also something to it.“
Healthy diet combined with exercise
This „something“ For the expert, this means that the metabolic disease is chronic, but you can still significantly lower the blood sugar level with physical activity up to endurance sports. The disease is genetically determined, but in addition to the age, as mentioned above, obesity and lack of exercise are further risk factors. Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 is not a deficiency of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar. The body cells develop in type 2 rather a so-called insulin resistance, the insulin, the sugar (glucose) can no longer conduct into the cells. This effect is favored by fat cells. As Lobmann emphasized, the course of the disease can also be influenced by healthy nutrition combined with exercise. The muscle cells consume more energy through exercise and absorb more glucose from the blood. „If you change your lifestyle consistently in the first two years after the onset of type 2 diabetes, diabetes can be pushed back very far“, so the doctor. „While you are always at a high risk, you can get so far that you really do not have diabetes from a metrological point of view.“
Reduce high blood sugar with endurance training
However, Lobmann acknowledged that only the smaller part of the patients can or will take this path. For example, a 50-year-old is easier than a 70-year-old, if his cardiovascular system no longer tolerates physical stress well. Especially for movement muffle or obese, the lifestyle change is common „a way with sweat and tears“. Therefore, the expert recommends all beginners to start with an endurance training of three times weekly 20 to 30 minutes and to increase the workload continuously. As sports, you can go running, Nordic walking or cycling. Even going for a walk or dancing can help to lower the high blood sugar. In addition, going for a walk also helps to reduce the risk of stroke, such as an analysis of the stroke „Women's Health Study“ revealed years ago. It would also be useful to give up the elevator more often and climb stairs; It also strengthens the heart and trains the muscles.
Diabetics are not automatically overweight or lazy
However, it is not always easy to get people in one „moving“ To live life. The 64 year old coach Theo Block, who runs a running group in the Westphalian town of Minden, also knows this „Diabetes Program Germany“ cared for. It starts in some diabetics with a run over 150 meters and then lead them to longer distances. At the University Hospital Tübingen Andreas Fritsche is also active in physical activity „as one of the most important forms of therapy“ on. The Professor of Nutritional Medicine and Prevention, however, is not only much too excited about diabetes and sports, he even annoys him. He explained: „You are not automatically overweight or lazy because you have sugar.“ There are also slim and athletic people among diabetics. „You do not have to blame those who are sick and say, you have done too little sport.“ He always speaks of his movement and not of sport before his patients. Fritsche, who is also spokesman for the German Diabetes Society, explained: „Many seriously ill people can not go to the gym or go jogging.“
Reduce medication dose through exercise
Obesity is one of the main risk factors, but the cause of a disease is a secretion disorder of insulin in the beta cells of the pancreas. However, exercise can relieve the beta cell and reduce the dose of medication. Of the diabetes patients, although about 70 percent are overweight, but this also applies to half of the normal population, which is as sport and Bewegungsungsststinent as diabetics. According to Fritsche, the advice to move more is also useful in other conditions such as colon cancer or heart attack. Movement also causes more, the less genetic burden of disease one bears. However, there is no disease that is as much attributed to lifestyle as diabetes - even if it naturally plays a role. „I do not know why diabetes has such a negative image of will weakness.“ As Lobmann pointed out, living with a healthy lifestyle could possibly avoid type 2 diabetes, even if you already had cases of it in your family.
