German "Tobacco Atlas": In Berlin smokes more than in Bavaria
The new "Tobacco Atlas" shows that the three states with the highest proportion of smokers are all in the north. The lowest values can be found in the south. Overall, however, less smoke is made in Germany.
More smokers in northern Germany
In the north of Germany is smoked more than in the southern half of the Republic. As the news agency dpa reported, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Bremen have the highest proportion of smokers. More than 34 percent of men and more than 23 percent of women in these three federal states are smoking. This emerges from the new "Tobacco Atlas", presented by the Federal Drug Commissioner Marlene Mortler (CSU) and the German Cancer Research Center on Tuesday in Berlin. According to the figures, the lowest values are found in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg as well as among women in Saxony. Good news: Tobacco use in Germany is on the decline. Nationwide, the proportion of smokers between 2009 and 2013 fell from 30.5 to 29.0 percent.

Less teens are smoking
Particularly positive: the number of young smokers has dropped significantly. This was shown by the 2015 Addiction Report, which was presented months ago. According to a study published in the spring, many smokers would like to keep their fingers off cigarettes, but they are too worried about possible withdrawal symptoms. This fear of ceasing is unfounded. If some tips are followed, smoking ceases to function well according to doctors. Among other behavioral therapies and nicotine gums or patches can help. It is important that you really want it and not have to be persuaded to stop smoking. (Ad)
