Depression A tattoo of great importance
For many people, mental illnesses such as burnout or depression are still a taboo topic. Those affected try to hide them, and relatives often dare not address them to the condition. A young woman from the US is openly dealing with her illness. She came up with something very special: a tattoo.
For many still a taboo topic
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Also in Germany more and more young people have to go for treatment because of depression. For many people, mental illness is unfortunately still a taboo topic. In addition, childhood and adolescent depression is often overlooked. Typical symptoms, such as lack of self-confidence, listlessness, lack of concentration or psychosomatic problems are often considered to be associated with puberty. In a young American, however, the disease was clearly diagnosed. She also does not have the widespread shame and speaks openly about her depression and has come up with something very special for it.
Young woman openly reports about her illness
20-year-old Bekah Miles from the US state of Oregon publishes the topic of depression with her Facebook post. "Dear Mom, dear Dad - please do not kill me for this permanent decision. I want you to listen to me. Today I tell you something that few know. I'm ready to talk about my illness, "she writes on her entry. At the post office, which has already collected hundreds of thousands of "likes", the young woman also published photos of her tattoo that she was stung because of the disease.
Tattoo with an extraordinary message
She wants to draw attention to her illness with her extraordinary tattoo. If you look at the lettering on her thigh from the front, you can read: "I'm fine". From the perspective of the young woman, however, the message is "Save me" ("Save me") to read. Miles explains: "Everyone who reads it sees 'I'm fine', but from my point of view it says 'Save me'. For me, this means that others think that someone is fine, but in fact, nothing is okay at all. It reminds me that the people who look happy may be fighting with themselves. "
Great encouragement for the courage
The 20-year-old also writes: "Mental illnesses are serious issues, but are considered shameful in our society. We care a lot about our physical health, but hardly about our mental health. "Numerous people have commented on their contribution and expressed their positive opinion about the great courage of the young woman. Little is known about the causes of depression. For the emergence of the disease, various factors such as stress, crises or physical triggers into consideration, but usually a combination of several causes is suspected. According to a recent British study, a healthy circle of friends could protect against depression. As the researchers reported, the risk of developing depression is lower the more mentally healthy friends you have. (Ad)
