The aroma of rosemary and lavender improves our memory
Do you suffer from memory problems? Then there could be a simple and natural way to better remember in the future. It could be enough to set up a single rosemary plant. Researchers found that the aroma of rosemary can significantly improve our memory.
Scientists from UK's Northumbria University report in a recent press release that the aroma of rosemary essential oils in elderly people can help improve memory performance. The physicians published the results of their study at the "British Psychological Society's annual conference".

There are plants that have a positive effect on our health through their aroma. Sometimes it is already sufficient to set up such plants in our home, in order to benefit from the positive consequences, explain the researchers. The scent of lavender, for example, increases the feeling of peace and contentment. The aroma of rosemary can help older people to remember better, say the experts. The physicians noted that the results of stored reminders in the tests increased by about 15 percent when the subjects were interviewed in rooms with rosemary flavor. Although this difference should not seem particularly big, it can have important implications. Patients may save themselves the intake of medicines, explains dr. Mark Moss from Northumbria University.

Rosemary aroma can help older people to remember better
During the investigation, the aroma of rosemary and lavender oil was released in a test room. Four drops of vegetable oil were distributed through a flavoring fan in the room, the scientists explain. This was switched on five minutes before the participants entered the room. A total of 150 people participated in the study. The subjects were all over the age of 65 years. Subjects were randomly divided into three groups. Either they came in a room with lavender scent, with rosemary scent or a room without fragrance, explain the authors. Thereafter, physicians performed tests to assess participants' potential memory capabilities.
Rosemary stimulates human brain tissue
When sufferers inhale rosemary, the compounds they contain are taken up through the lungs and then sent to the brain via our blood, the researchers say. There it actually seems to improve the chemistry of our brain. The activity of human brain tissue is apparently stimulated by rosemary, the scientists explain. Rosemary subjects had far better results in memory tests than the other two groups. This is the first time that similar effects have been demonstrated in healthy people over the age of 65, explains author Lauren Bussey of Northumbria University. However, further research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of these flavors.
Mint tea improves our long-term memory
A separate experiment by the same research team showed that peppermint tea can also have a positive effect on our memory. A total of 180 participants were randomly given a sip of mint tea, chamomile tea or hot water. After twenty minutes, a series of tests were then carried out. These evaluate the memory and various other cognitive functions, explain the experts. The analysis showed that the consumption of peppermint tea improves our long-term memory and attention. Chamomile tea, on the other hand, clearly slowed our attention and the performance of memory, explain the physicians. It has been very interesting to observe the contrasting effects of the two different herbal teas on our mood and cognition, says dr. Moss from Northumbria University. The improvement in memory and the excitatory effect of peppermint, as well as the soothing effect of chamomile, show that the use of these herbs can have a beneficial effect for us, explains the physician.
