Colon Cancer Prevention Do not hope for too much of the healthy foods
Colon cancer is one of the three most common cancers in this country. A healthy lifestyle can prevent many diseases. Especially important here is the diet. But that alone is not enough. Physicians point out that early detection examinations are the best prevention.
Do not lose sight of screening examinations
According to health experts, colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of prostate cancer and lung cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death in women after breast cancer. To prevent illness, you should eat well and exercise a lot. But even people with a healthy lifestyle should lose sight of the important screening tests. Especially not those in whose family already colon cancer has occurred.
Colonoscopy is the best prevention
Scientific research has shown that complete nutrition can prevent colon cancer. Even the daily consumption of nuts contributes to a natural cancer protection.
In contrast, frequent consumption of red meat is considered a risk factor for colorectal cancer. In contrast, vegetarians get less common colon cancer, as a study by US researchers showed.
If you want to prevent cancer, but you should not rely solely on nutritional recommendations, warns the professional association Established gastroenterologist Germany in a message from the news agency dpa.
According to the experts, the best prevention is still a colonoscopy. In this study - called colonoscopy - polyps were detected and removed early. Ideally, a tumor will not develop at all.
Early detection can save lives
Statutory insured persons are entitled to an early test from the age of 50 looking for blood in the stool.
From the age of 56, the fund will pay for a colonoscopy. Ten years later, patients can have another colonoscopy done.
The check-up is especially important if it has already come in the family to colon cancer cases. The early detection can save lives, because a tumor in the large or small intestines grows slowly and caused in most sufferers for a long time no problems.
"Relatives of colorectal cancer patients, the risk of becoming ill, compared to the general population increases to two to four times," said the spokeswoman of the established gastrointestinal doctors, Dr. med. Dagmar Mainz, in a message. "Especially for these people a precautionary colonoscopy is urgently recommended."
Balanced diet and regular exercise
According to the gastrointestinal physicians, an unhealthy diet high in sugar and animal fat can promote cancer.
It is therefore generally advisable to eat a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, some fish, a little meat and vegetable fats. By eliminating smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, the risk of colorectal cancer can also be reduced. And regular exercise also protects against cancer.
However, if symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation or even blood in the stool occur, the family doctor should first be consulted, which decides in doubt, consult a gastrointestinal physician. (Ad)
