Butter and margarine: Only real with 80 percent fat content
Spreads containing less than 80 percent may not be legally designated as butter or margarine. If the fat content deviates, the European standard is simply a "fat spread".
At least 80 percent fat
Only if they contain at least 80 percent fat, butter and margarine may also be designated as such. This was announced by the Federal Association of food chemists in the civil service in a message from the news agency dpa. The association refers to the European marketing standards. In addition, fat-reduced variants are commercially available. In the case of so-called three-quarter-fat butter, the fat content varies between 60 and 62 percent and between 39 and 41 percent in the case of low-fat varieties. If a product is labeled "fat spread", the fat content may differ. In such cases, however, the claim must be found on the packaging. Butter and Magarine must have a fat content of at least 80 percent. butter or margarine?
The question of whether butter or even margarine is healthier is, among other things, accompanied by the discussion about good and bad cholesterol. Meanwhile, even products are available that contain both butter and margarine. And in some cases, margarine additives are added, which should have a health-promoting effect, such as to lower the cholesterol level. The fact that such substances are often controversial, showed recently the so-called margarine dispute between the food company Unilever and the consumer protection organization Foodwatch. (Ad)
