Small bloodsuckers: Ticks multiply particularly strongly this year
Ticks can transmit dangerous infectious diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) or Lyme disease. Due to the mild winter and the wet and warm spring, the small bloodsuckers multiply particularly strong this year. The higher the number of parasites, the greater the risk of disease.

There are a lot of ticks this year
Ticks are dangerous disease carriers. The small parasites can, among other things, transmit infectious diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) or Lyme disease. Especially many ticks are on the way this year. This is due to the relatively mild winter and the wet spring. Professor Martin Pfeffer from the Institute of Animal Hygiene at the University of Leipzig and his team have discovered that ticks are spreading further and further to the north. For a year now, the Vogtlandkreis in Saxony has been an FSME risk area. Currently, the endemic area is the subject of two studies at the University of Leipzig.

Large part gets infected with leisure activities
According to medical sources, 90 percent of TBE sufferers become infected with recreational activities. Especially in older people, the disease can be difficult. About one third of the infected people have symptoms of illness. First, there are flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting and dizziness. "About 70 percent of TBE sufferers develop brain, meningitis or spinal inflammation," Dr. Olaf Leschnik, chief physician of the clinic for neurology in the hospital Rodewisch (Vogtlandkreis) in a message. "Some patients may need to relearn speaking or walking after completing an FSME viral infection or have other lifelong disabilities. TBE is not causally treatable. We doctors can only alleviate the symptoms, we are powerless against the virus. " Leschnik. Health experts advise some people to be vaccinated against ticks by ticks. Thus, the vaccination is recommended both the residents of risk areas as well as people who go on holiday and while traveling in the wild.

To protect best from ticks
In addition to TBE, ticks can also transmit Lyme disease. Although no vaccine protects against this infectious disease, it can be treated with antibiotics. The sooner the disease is discovered, the better. Basically, it is best to protect yourself from ticks as well as possible. Ideally, one stays on the trails while walking. When hiking, you should always remember to wear long trousers and, if necessary, put the trouser legs in the socks. Specialized sprays, known as repellents, can keep the creepy-crawlies away. In addition, one should search thoroughly after spending time in nature and, if necessary, react quickly. After a tick bite is urgent, warn doctors. Since the dangerous pathogens spread in the bloodstream eight to twelve hours after the sting, you can drastically reduce the risk of infection if you find ticks early and removed. (Ad)
