Study: Fenugreek helps Parkinson's patients

05/03/2014

An Indian research team found that a herbal extract of fenugreek in combination with Levo-Dopa supplements can improve parkinsonian symptoms.

The double-blind study involved a total of 50 Parkinson's patients aged 18-70 years, divided into two groups. They received one capsule of fenugreek (300 mg) twice daily for a period of six months, or a placebo capsule twice in addition to their standard Parkinson's medication Levo-Dopa.

Using a standardized scale to collect Parkinson-specific symptoms, changes in mental, motor and everyday factors were documented. After six months, it was shown that the disease-specific symptoms had improved significantly in the fenugreek group (Verum group: 0.098% vs. placebo group: 13.36%).

It is important that L-dopa is still taken because the plant extract inhibits the damage of dopaminergic neurons and thus delay the progression of the disease. (Pm)
