Cardiovascular diseases, and with them the high blood pressure, are in Germany number one cause of death. Although the symptoms are easy to recognize and treat, widespread disease often remains undetected for a long time.

The Stiftung Warentest has a new book on the subject with the title „ Eat well in high blood pressure“ released. It aims to help sufferers better understand the disease and identify ways to actively prevent it.

One tip is, among other things, to use fresh food and to abstain from the preparation of canned food. Rice and pasta should be salted after cooking. So the products absorb less salt. Generally, we all salt more than necessary in the preparation of our food. A low-salt diet can lower the blood pressure in those affected. Our salt-accustomed sense of taste sets itself after a few days on the salt-poor preparation and all the more, the better it is possible to give food through herbs and spices a tasteful touch.

A low-salt diet does not necessarily have to be bland. More than 80 recipes are described in the book and are intended to facilitate the change in diet: saffron risotto, lentils with bacon, pancakes and sweet and sour marinade are just a few examples that are easy to prepare and also bring about changes.

In addition, the reader is explained by experts what can be done in addition to the hypertension, what medications work and what therapies are known. The nutritionist Dagmar von Gramm, member of the presidium of the German Nutrition Society, has designed and contributed the recipes for this book. The author Dagmar Nolte is known as a medical journalist. The 207-page book „Good food for high blood pressure“ will be available from the end of August. (Fr)
