A cold beer at the end of a long summer day - that is for many the epitome of refreshing enjoyment. The prerequisite for this is proper storage.

A sworn beer lovers put on a "freshly tapped". For domestic use there are kegs with a volume of five liters (in the Rhineland "Pittermännchen") or so-called KEGs (English: barrel) with up to 20 liters of content. However, proper cones must be practiced: neither beer nor carbon dioxide should be lost. On the safe side and also at short notice and prepared for different tastes you are with bottled beer. This dominates in Germany also thanks to favorable price and good availability of the beer market.

Whether it comes in the barrel or in the bottle in the trade - beer is a pure natural product and therefore only limited shelf life; in sealed containers for up to six months. The older a beer gets, the more it changes its taste.

The ideal storage place for beer kegs or plastic crates with bottles is a dark cellar with a stable room temperature between four and seven degrees Celsius. Canned beer can be stored much longer. This was stabilized and pasteurized before bottling, making it less susceptible to temperature fluctuations. The expiration date (MHD) on the respective packaging indicates until when beer consumption without quality loss or impairment is possible. Signs of quality loss are peeling taste, musty flavor or low carbonation.

The optimum drinking temperature is five to eight, but a maximum of ten degrees. Beer definitely has no place in the freezer - not even for last-minute cooling. Beer is best left to cool in the fridge. For a trip or transport, the bottles or cans are wrapped in newspaper. So the stuffed keeps cool for a long time. For the big party, nothing bothers to fill the bathtub with cold water and ice and to keep the bottles cool.

If you want to enjoy your beer from the glass, you should take some time to pour it. Only if the drink is allowed to flow evenly from the tap or the bottle into the glass, which is held at a slight angle, a bright layer of quite firm and stable foam forms at the top - the popular crown.
